Family Weekend at Loomis

Another Family Weekend

On October 13th the Loomis Chaffee School welcomed parents to campus for family weekend. The itinerary included student performances, a speech from Head of School Dr. Sheila Culbert, college application advice, and a morning meet and greet with the teaching staff.
On Friday afternoon, many ensemble groups performed music. The Performing Arts Sampler this weekend allowed parents to witness their child’s musical accomplishments and the progress they have made. Every year, the skillful experiences of the students are a highlight of the weekend.
“I wish there were more events that both students and parents can participate in,” Jake Delcampe ’25 said.
Afterall, the main purpose of family weekend is to give students time to connect with their families, so some group activities would be a nice addition next year.
Boarder Anna Lim ‘27 also enjoyed family weekend. While the quality time with her family was the paramount experience, she noted: “the food was a lot better, especially the pizza.” Anna voiced the opinion of the broader student body: we would like to see the parents’ weekend food year-round.
On Saturday morning, the parent-teacher meet and greet was hosted in the Katherine Brush Library. Parents met with teachers in a format similar to speed dating, discussing their child’s academic achievements and progress this year. The meetings were an overall positive experience, however many parents complained that the experience felt rushed and chaotic. In pre-COVID times, parents were allowed to visit classes, where they could experience an hour with each teacher, observing their child’s classroom experience in person. Will class-visits be brought back next year, or will this event stay in the past?
On Saturday afternoon, the Loomis athletes did not disappoint. The Boys’ Varsity Soccer won 5-0. The Girls’ Varsity Volleyball won 3-0. The Girls’ Varsity Cross Country won 17-43. Across the board, many of the JV and Thirds teams were also successful. Boy’s JV Water polo won 8-5, and Girls Thirds Soccer won 9-1. These winning scores represent the rigorous training that Loomis athletes endure throughout the season.
As it has always been, parent’s weekend this year was again filled with joy, love, and many celebrations.
