22 LC Students Chosen for All-NEPSAC Pelicans 2020

This past winter sports season, 22 Loomis athletes were selected for the 2019-20 New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) All-League teams for their individual sports, and two others were chosen for NEPSAC All-League honorable mentions.
In one of Loomis’s most competitive and prestigious sports, two girls from the varsity girls basketball team and four boys from the varsity boys basketball team earned spots on the All-League Team.
“It means everything to me to be selected for the All-League team. Our league has a lot of talented players and I felt honored being selected with them. It was really exciting for me to be nominated during my last season of basketball ever to tie together my three seasons at Loomis and my career,” Sky Hanley ’20, a four-year senior, said.
Sky doesn’t have any regrets from her Loomis career, but she was looking forward to playing a spring sport.
“I wish I could have participated in water polo this spring season to bring an end to my Loomis sports career, but I am extremely proud of all three of my years here and the feats my teams have been able to accomplish, and all of the adversity we overcame,” Sky said.
Nate Santos ’21, one of the boys team’s players, emphasized the importance of his team’s Class A championship before his own accolades, but still made it clear that he was very appreciative to be selected for the All-League Team.
“ I think that winning the championship has opened my eyes about what it means to win and com[e] together as a team. I’m proud that even after my injury last year, I was still back there and playing well,” Nate said.
Two girls of the varsity ice hockey team also earned a spot on the All-League Team.
“[The award] was very humbling, especially my senior year, and it was a nice reward to finish off with. It meant a lot coming from the league, since I’ve worked so hard these past three years,” Bree Bergeron ’20 said.
Even though her team didn’t make it to the championship game, as a whole, they finished pretty strong. Bree is satisfied with how she ended her Loomis hockey career, and proud of her growth as a player and person.
14 members of the varsity swimming and diving team qualified for the All-League Team.
One celebrated member of the varsity boys swimming and diving team, Min Jun Jung ’20 was ecstatic upon hearing of his selection.
“I’m honored to have received it and I think it’s a really neat recognition. However, I’m far more proud of our team’s successes this past season, rather than my individual recognitions. That being said, [the award] would look neat on my Wikipedia page,” Min said.
His swimming of the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley at the New England Championships, along with his final times qualified him to be on the All-League team.
“I really wanted that 100m backstroke record and I was off by a few tenths. However, I’m happy with my placement in the finals of New England’s and I’m most proud of our team’s finish at that championship. I’ve definitely poured my heart and soul into the 11 seasons of athletics I was able to participate in and I couldn’t be happier about that,” Min said.
Another swimmer, Sophie Rodner ’21, shared her perspective on being a part of the All-League team.
“Selection to the All-League team is special to me because it recognizes athletes from all different schools in our league. Girls who you know, race against, and respect are also acknowledged,” Sophie said.
She placed in finals with the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, and exceeded some of her expectations.
“I broke the school record in the 100 meter fly, which was very exciting,” Sophie said, “however, swimming is a very cruel and unforgiving sport as results rely solely on the clock, and even though I did have a successful season, I cannot wait to get back in the water next winter and start working again.”
