You can tell that the long-awaited spring term is finally here when the vibes of Loomis Chaffee have changed. From the blooming flowers and the buzzing bees to the major difference in the weather, one can see smiles, ear to ear, from every direction. The quads become the new hot spot for students, who oftentimes chat with friends and have class outside.
One can see an array of students on the quad. The first victims of Loomis Chaffee’s spring term are the spikeball athletes. Time isn’t a concern for them as they can spend hours from sunrise to sunset playing spikeball. The pure joy of hitting a ball on a net is enough to entertain them for every hour, every minute, and every second of the day. No one can get in their way of playing, as this is their way of unwinding from their rigorous academics. These athletes are popularly seen after weekday dinners, on Friday nights, and all day during the weekend.
The tanning girls are the next victims of spring term. Must-have items that help spot them are their sandals, shorts, and a classic towel to lie on. No one likes checking the UV as much as they do—because for them, a good sunny day means a good tan, and a good tan means a good mood. These girls would be wearing dresses throughout the week to show off their freshly tanned skin and tan lines. One can spot them on the quad or even in the meadows with a loud speaker playing the top 100 songs of 2025. They check the weather app at least twice a day. The only time these girls would have a frown on their face is if it’s cloudy or rainy.
The third type of victim during the spring at Loomis suffers from the culmination of difficult courses they’ve been taking. This final stretch, also known as spring term, is of paramount importance to them. These types of students continuously stay on their “grind” and never miss a beat when it comes to acing tests and quizzes…or at least trying to do so. As “locked in” as they are, they still try to take advantage of the sunny weather in Connecticut. As a result, many students study on the picnic tables in the quad and quiz each other while enjoying the beautiful sunshine our state offers during the spring.
Finally, there are the “senioritis” victims. With graduation on the horizon, and the warm sun to bask in, schoolwork becomes of least importance. What these students love best are the memories they’ve made in their 4 years here. The quad allows seniors to relive these bittersweet moments through each blade of grass and rigid plastic chair (while ignoring their increasingly unimportant work, of course). As the weather gets warmer, so does these students’ continuous procrastination, evoking a ‘does it really matter?’ attitude. Indeed, with prom and commencement so close, spring is nothing more than an avenue to graduation.
