The Loomis Chaffee Girls Varsity Tennis team has made a solid record of 3-3 thus far into the season. A relatively small team featuring twelve girls—six of them sophomores—the girls varsity tennis team’s typical two-hour practice begins with a few laps around the courts, then some dynamic warmups and stretching. This is followed by hitting serves, volleys, getting in shots, and rallying back and forth. The team occasionally plays a game similar to tag, but with a tennis ball, and whoever ends up with the ball on the day before a match has to wear a silly T-shirt to class the next day.
“[We’re really successful because of the] supportive nature of the team, and even if we are losing we still find a way to be positive and cheer each other on,” Ivy Van Blerkom ’27 said when asked about the team’s success. “Our seniors and captains are very supportive through practice, helping [us] with any little tips they’ve learned throughout their time. They really know how to play high school tennis.”
As a team, they hope to continue improving their shots and their form for the New England Championships at the end of the season.
