The Varsity Girls Water Polo team scored a 19-11 victory over Hamden Hall on Senior Day—the last home game of their season—as they honored two key senior teammates, Emma Goodkin ’25 and Meredith Doherty ’25. To mark the occasion, the team celebrated their win at Raising Cane’s restaurant, where they simultaneously recognized the contributions of their seniors both in and out of the pool.
Goodkin and Doherty have been vital in shaping the team’s success and leading them this season. Sophomore Elizabeth Higgins ’27 praised the two for their leadership and dedication. “They always play so well and bring the best spirit, both in and out of the pool,” Higgins said. “They are incredibly motivational, super strong, and have amazing perseverance. They are always willing to learn and help others.”
Coach Aidan Winn spoke highly of Doherty’s extensive water polo experience. “Meredith brings a significant amount of water polo experience, and she leverages that to lead by example,” he explained. “She not only excels in her own play but also takes the time to teach and coach the newer players, helping them improve their skills.”
Goodkin ’25 has an equally significant impact. “Emma is a little more reserved, but she does the same thing [as Doherty],” Coach Winn said. “She never complains, does everything we ask of her and more, and really takes feedback from other players and coaches. Emma is a testament to what it means to be a coachable athlete.”
“My favorite moment [of Senior Day] was the team dinner after,” Goodkin responded when asked about her favorite part of the last home game and subsequent celebration. “We had tons of good food, and all our families were there. It was a great way to celebrate our win with the team. The dinner also allowed our team to further bond in preparation for the rest of the season.”
In terms of her contributions to the game, Goodkin ’25 highlighted a key moment. “I was playing defense on one of their better shooters for a large part of the game,” she recalled. “I really felt that I was able to shut her down and block her shots, which definitely helped the team.”
Looking ahead, as they prepare for a series of away games, Coach Winn is confident the team has what it takes.
“Away games are always a challenge, but they also bring a different level of fun and excitement,” he said. “We’ve become a much more cohesive team, and I’m confident we can continue that growth as we finish the season strong.”
“It is important to just work hard during practice, keep inspiring each other, and keep the energy up,” Sarah Lamphere ’27, another member of the Varsity Girls Water Polo team, said about the team’s remaining season.
With Goodkin and Doherty’s leadership, the team has shown tremendous growth, and they’re poised to finish the season strong. The seniors’ perseverance, dedication, and ability to lead by example will undoubtedly continue to guide the team in their remaining away games.
