Rowyn Nurry, an exceptional lacrosse player on campus, committed to playing on the men’s Division 1 team at Cornell University on September 6, 2022. He has played lacrosse since the age of 2 and has followed the sport on the college level with his brothers for years.
“As a younger kid, I aspired to be those guys on TV playing for their college,” he stated. Now, Rowyn is on the brink of fulfilling that childhood dream.
While choosing a school, Rowyn admired the coaching staff and brotherhood at Cornell. Specifically, he knew that Cornell was the perfect fit for him after he heard the story of one of the school’s former lacrosse team captains, George Boiardi.
“George was the epitome of an excellent captain at Cornell. But in one tight game in the fourth quarter, George dove in front of the ball and was struck in the chest so aggressively by the ball that it sadly took his life. Ever since, Cornell has honored George’s legacy by building their program around what he stood for,” Rowyn explained.
After hearing this inspiring story, Rowyn grew to love the team mentality and support entailed in Cornell’s program. George’s legacy stuck with Rowyn due to his personal heavy emphasis on the values of unity and leadership. He believes this story played a crucial role in hisdevelopment, along with his commitment to play at a Division I level.
“I want to be the best teammate I can possibly be at Cornell," Rowyn said, in reference to the next step in his lacrosse career. With Rowyn’s work ethic and kindness, there is no doubt that he will thrive next year in Ithaca.
