In the 2024–2025 winter sports season, the Loomis Chaffee Girls Varsity Basketball team has come on top of not only the Founders League, an impressive feat, but all of NEPSAC Class A. With all seven seniors committed to continuing their athletic careers, the team is filled with driven and hard-working players.
Playing schools across the tri-state area, the team ended their impressive season in Olcott with a 51–45 win over Sacred Heart Academy. “[The win is] a reflection of all the hard work, resilience, and growth the team and I have shown throughout the season,” said sophomore Leah McKenzie. With a final record of 25–3, the team had a near-perfect season. “We had a couple of tough losses, but coming back from break, we definitely bounced back, worked harder together, and became more competitive,” stated junior Lauren Wright.
After winning the Founders League title, the team was placed as the #1 seed in the NEPSAC Class A Championships. After wins against Phillips Academy Andover (70–28) and Hotchkiss (69–56), they secured their spot in the final on March 9. “Everyone was very ready to go into the game [and had] a lot of passion and drive,” said sophomore Anna Sigrist when asked about the championship. Loomis’s opponent, Sacred Heart Greenwich, who ended the season 21–5, had beaten skilled teams such as Milton Academy and Kent in the Class A tournament. While there were certainly nerves, it was the team’s passion, skill, hard work, and culture that helped guarantee the win. “We lift each other up, compete with passion, and never lose sight of our goal,” McKenzie ’27 commented.
This victory marks the varsity basketball team’s fourth straight NEPSAC championship. “It’s exciting because we put the work in all seasons, and we’ve all spent a lot of time in the gym playing together and working hard,” Wright ’26 remarked. With the victory trophy returning to Olcott once again, the basketball team is ready and excited for what’s to come.
