With a remarkable season record of 26–2–1, the Loomis Chaffee Girls Varsity Hockey team, described as a “competitive, fun, and hard-working (group of athletes)” by Emily Hosman ’28 and Chloe Obser ’25, has had an outstanding season this past winter. Led by head coach Liz Leyden, assistant coaches Emma Lange, Chelsea Ouellete, along with captains Catie Collins ’25 and Chloe Obser ’25, this team stood out from the very beginning of the season, proving to be strong and fierce competitors to any team who stepped on the ice. This ferocity and strength secured them a spot in the Elite 8, where they would bring home the 2024-2025 Girls Hockey NEPSAC Championship title.
While the team’s success can certainly be attributed to their individual skill and athleticism, it was their collective effort and strong team dynamics that truly set them apart. Team captain Chloe Obser ’25 noted that the victory felt “surreal” and said, “It felt like all our hard work from the season had finally paid off.” The team held resolute positivity and relentless team spirit throughout the season, contributing to their success. Emily Hosman ’28 supported this, praising the team’s “willingness to work and get better,” which was evident at every practice and game.
The culture within the team was another factor that fueled their success. Obser ’25 states, “We push each other on and off the ice to be the best versions of ourselves. We stay bonded through the little things, like always eating dinner together after practice and spending a lot of time together.” This closeness was what turned this team into a close-knit family, which is what ultimately helped build a strong foundation for their championship run. Hosman ’28 shared how the team bonded from day one, recalling her initial nerves this season as a freshman: “At first, it was scary, but as soon as everyone was on campus, everyone was so welcoming and excited for me to be there.”
The coaches played a crucial role in developing the team’s success. As Obser ’25 mentioned, “The coaches do a really good job of tailoring their coaching specifically to each player.” Hosman ’28 added, “Our coaches are always excited for your accomplishments on and off the ice.” This supportive environment, both on and off the ice, allowed players to flourish and grow throughout the season.
As the season has come to a close, it is evident that the 2024-2025 Loomis Chaffee Girls Varsity Hockey team and their hard-earned successes have left a mark on the Loomis Chaffee community as a whole. Hosman ’28 summed up the experience by saying, “I knew this season we were going to be a pretty good team, but I never would have thought we would win the NEPSAC championship.” From freshmen who are just beginning their journeys on the team to seniors who have worked hard for the past four years, leading their team to victory, the achievements of this team are incredibly commendable and will certainly be unforgettable for years to come.
