At the center of the Loomis Chaffee campus lies Scanlan Campus Center, a tall, magnificent building that’s home to the LC Dining Hall. While this space allows students to socialize or catch up on homework during free periods, its most important function is to provide students an area to dine. Flik, Loomis’ third-party food provider, serves a variety of dishes inspired by cuisines from around the world, including China, India, Mexico, Japan, and Italy. However, in addition to the globally inspired main courses, Loomis Chaffee also offers everyday items, from bagels and countless types of bread, to salad bars, to limitless ice cream and an endless supply of pasta. With so many options to choose from on a daily basis, one could only wonder what the best LC Dining Hall food is.
Many students claim the Crispy Pork Dumplings immediately come to mind. Freshman Zoe Rhodes said, ‘It’s more flavorful than the other options, and the filling is the best.’ Junior Judy Kwon stated the dish ‘reminds her of home.’
Another popular pick for Loomis students is the taco menu. "Personally, I enjoy it when the Taco menu is on because I feel like I get to pick and choose what I want and enjoy it as not only a taco or burrito but also a bowl,” said Freshman Victoria Cho.
Faculty also have their favorites. English faculty Ms. Rowe remarked, “I enjoy when they try to do their version of the Jamaican jerk chicken, and I enjoy the corn beef and cabbage. They’re also pretty good at Indian food.”
French teacher Ms. Hazard said, “The dining hall pizza is the best pizza in Windsor, Connecticut. I love a brick-oven pizza with a nice and charred crust. The sauce to cheese ratio is perfect.”
For me, after seeing both perspectives and hearing the mixed opinions, the Crispy Pork Dumplings remain the best meal of the Loomis Chaffee Dining Hall. While the crunchy dumpling wrapper provides the overall dish with a nice, crisp texture, the star of the dish is the pork filling. To say it’s the perfect mix of flavor and texture would be an understatement. This dish has an ideal ratio of dumpling wrapper to filling, making for the best bite every time. Finally, the sweet chili sauce that is served with these dumplings complements the dish perfectly, as it’s not too spicy or overpoweringly sweet, which complements the umami flavors well. Every time this dish is on the menu, plates are stacked high with dumplings and flooded with large pools of sauce. Due to high demand, it’s common to see the trays of dumplings being refilled every 10-15 minutes.
