Loomis Chaffee’s continuous dedication to satisfying the extracurricular interests of students is evident through its expansive selection of more than 75 student-led clubs and organizations. Whether academic, artistic, social, cultural, athletic, or musical, there are many opportunities for students to interact with their peers on a shared subject of passion.
The Student Activities organization (StuActs) is a club that has dedicated itself to holding events for the student body for over 20 years.
“The main goal is to provide fun, safe activities on the weekends for all of our students,” Ms. Cathy Markowski, Director of StuActs, said. “[StuActs] is not focused on a particular group, but targeted towards the emphasis of ‘all’ of the students who can participate.”
“We communicate with people when [students involved in STUActs] are meeting and [the leadership team] takes notes during the meeting to send out to people what is happening and who signed up for what event,” said Judy Kwon ’26, a student leader of StuActs working in the communications team.
Within the leadership team, individuals are divided into different sections. As a part of Communications, Kwon is in charge of informing and organizing various upcoming activities. With numerous clubs at Loomis, STUActs also introduced a “Club Team”, which monitors other clubs and their events, ensuring that no overlap will occur and that the budget will be adhered to.
The voices of students are the major guides for planning all weekend activities happening on campus. Ms. Markowski noted that she tries to include various student opinions and hosts weekly meetings on Mondays in order to receive input.
“I hope students are able to put their busy week behind and on the weekends just have a lot of fun,” Ms. Markowski said, explaining her motive for her extensive efforts.
Kwon shared that being part of this club taught her a lot about ‘the community and being responsible for organizing events.’ She said, “[We need quite a few] people to work, because [we] have to set up and take down [almost all activities]."
Some of Ms. Markowski's favourite weekend activities include mini golf, laser tag, and the Glow Dance, an inaugural initiative on campus this year.
Seeing others smiling and making impactful memories helped her feel that she is making a difference for the community, Kwon said. “These sentiments were what attracted me to be part of this club,” she explained.
At the core of StuAct’s mission, moreover, is a friendly environment where every individual's opinion and all creative ideas are welcomed.
"Anyone can join… If [students] want to do anything… [they] can just say what [they] want to do and it's very low-key, and no ideas are shut down,” Kwon said.
