April marks Earth Month, and at Loomis, it is a time for our community to reflect on our relationship with the environment. Whether students wish to take the lead in initiating Earth Month activities or simply participate, April will include a month-long series of events to raise awareness of the need for sustainability and serve as a call to action.
Leading the charge this month are the school’s E-Proctors, which consists of students passionate about environmental change. Ms. Griggs, an associate director of the Alvord Center and faculty advisor for the E-Proctors, shared, “E-proctors are heavily involved in this, making sure that these initiatives are moving forward. We are hugely grateful and could not do all the events without them.” The E-Proctors are not the only group on campus supporting Earth Month. With help from the Darwin Club, the PHI, and several guided research projects, Earth Month is offering activities ranging from planting trees around campus to environmental-themed board game nights.
This year is particularly exciting for some students, such as Emanuelle Marcus ’26, who shared, “I am excited for just Earth Month in general. This is the first year where everyone got together and was able to plan their own collaborative events.” The E-Proctors all offered up ideas for Earth Month activities and their hard work is reflected in the itinerary for April.
With the promotion of climate aware habits through daily announcements and social media, the group hopes that the whole community will be involved in some way or another. The main goal of Earth Month is to integrate environmentally conscious thinking into everyday life, not just during April.
Kelly Kassab ’27 shares that “Earth Month is super important because it introduces everyone to so many topics that constantly go over people’s heads.” The message of Earth Month should not be scary, but one of hope and appreciation for our planet. “Thinking about the environment doesn’t have to be depressing,” Marcus said. “Showing more appreciation for nature around us—and letting that fuel your desire to be environmental—is a more positive outlook.”
Ms. Griggs emphasized, “The hope is that Earth Month gives the community an opportunity to mindfully pay attention to the environment around us and, ideally, think of ways to give back and be engaged, too.”
