Compiling a record of over 20 wins, this year's Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Team has been nothing short of astonishing. “The trust and commitment we have to one another make a huge difference in our performance and overall success,” said Lizzie Orszulak ’27. After a 3-1 victory over Lawrenceville and a 3-2 win against Choate in overtime to secure the Founders Championship, the team is excited for what's to come. “Looking ahead, our goals remain focused on maintaining health, having fun, and ultimately pushing ourselves to compete for an Elite Eight championship,” said Assistant Coach Emma Lange.
The team began their season with a trip to Europe over Thanksgiving break, where they played games, but also spent time together bonding as a team. “The experience of traveling, competing, and growing together really gave us an extra advantage heading into the winter season,” Lizzie noted.
But the season has not been without its obstacles. Lizzie mentioned, “I think injury is something most teams have to deal with. We’ve had a few this year, ranging from concussions to broken fingers, and it’s been a challenge.” However, the team has not let that dampen their spirits. “We are not outcome focused, but process focused – we concentrate on each game, trusting that our commitment to the process and fostering intra-team unity will guide us throughout the postseason,” Coach Lange stated.
One of the biggest contributors to the team's success has been everyone’s commitment and hard work. With four freshmen, five sophomores, eight juniors, four seniors, and one postgraduate, many of whom are committed to collegiate Division 1 programs, the team is nothing short of talented. In addition to skill, these girls are also filled with both heart and competitive spirit. “Every time we step on the ice, we push ourselves to be better and play at our best. We also don’t just play for ourselves but for the whole team which is very important,” Lizzie expressed.
“Overall, the team had had an extremely successful season, but it is not quite over, with the postseason coming up. “I think collectively we want to finish on a really strong note,” Lizzie added in closing.
