Loomis Chaffee’s Girls JV Squash team is the epitome of friendship and teamwork. This team is fairly young, with most of its members being freshmen new to the sport. They ended their season by beating the mighty Williston team twice, as well as our rival school, Kent. Throughout the season, these girls haven’t stopped pushing and trying to get better.
The team has learned so much more than just the game of squash—they became better people and even better teammates. Playing a team sport can teach you so many things, but arguably the most important is how to be a good teammate. “The girls have all become good friends, which is so nice to see. I always see them eating lunch and dinner together and we all say hi to each other in the hallways,” Manager Catherine Havens ’27 stated. “It’s nice to see everyone being so friendly and kind to one another outside of the squash courts.” Having a good team and people to support you is extremely important and helps boost morale and mood overall. It makes the sport more fun, and showing up to practice every day is a better experience. Everyday these girls show up with a positive attitude and a smile ready to play. “I love the people on the team and I feel like we are all pretty close,” Judy Kwon ’26 said. “Everyone seriously wants to get better but the vibe is very chill so I look forward to going to practice every day. My favorite part is the challenge matches because I get to see how I can translate what we do in practice drills into games and try out tactics.”
These girls are competitive, always striving for a higher spot on the ladder and spot on the team, showing some competitive spirit and fire.
To go along with that competitiveness, they never fail to be supportive as well. When girls are playing, others are always watching, helping to keep score, and cheering on both players. This team represents our school's values of being the best self and the common good. They push each other to be better people and better players every practice.
While winning is undoubtedly important, maybe that isn’t the question we should be asking. Did they have fun? Did they improve and learn something? What did you learn about other people, or most of all, what did you learn about yourself? The Girls JV Squash team has definitely made a positive impact, and should be an inspiration to anyone new to Loomis that wants to try out a new sport and make friends.
