This year, STUCO is aiming to provide additional visibility between the representatives and the student body. Whether through weekly minutes, the Instagram page, or the continuation of community-time open meetings, the Student Council is striving to communicate actively with peers, faculty, and the school. In addition to promoting visibility, we have recently introduced new concrete Task Groups and “Micro Initiatives.” Here are updates on the concrete task groups:
Our Cell Phone Policy Task Group is frequently meeting with Mr. Howes and other groups of faculty and students. This task group has highlighted the importance of the representatives’ role in incorporating students’ voices along with the change.
The Menstrual Products Task Group is working with the administration to add more accessible menstrual products to female and all-gender restrooms on campus. This task group is trying to find cost-effective, sustainable, and healthy product options by researching menstrual products.
The Sustainability Task Group works to expand on the school’s current commitment to sustainability, working alongside the efforts of the E-Proctors (more hands-on work) and environmental clubs (outreach and education). This task group’s long-term goal is to create a pledge or commitment to sustainability agreed upon by the administration and trustees.
The Curriculum Committee aims to revise academic policies, discuss changes to the current curriculum and course offerings, and vote on new course additions. There are currently two Student representatives on the Curriculum Committee, and they meet monthly with roughly 16 administrative faculty and department heads.
The Community Time task group was initiated this year and aims to find creative solutions to make community times more active, engaging, and grounded in uniting the Loomis community. A major goal of the Community Time task group is to revise how all-school meetings are held to bring the community together in more thoughtful and creative ways.
The Local Businesses Task Group aims to incorporate local businesses into student life on campus. They compiled a list of family-owned restaurants in the Windsor and Hartford area for clubs and Student Activities to draw from when getting food for meetings.
Some “Micro initiatives” that have been brought up are staff gifts, sophomores allowed in the library during nighttime study hall, and a résume builder workshop. While Stuco currently has only six concrete groups, the number is expected to grow as the year goes by.
STUCO is looking forward to the year ahead, and all the representatives are excited to see where individual task groups will take us! As we have covered any adjustments to school bylaws last spring, we are ready to tackle new challenges and opportunities.
