Should Schools Across the United States Enforce a Dress Code?
All schools should consider the message they convey when implementing a dress code. Although they are often associated with equality and professionalism, this has become a contentious issue in light of many concerns. Many private schools in America have a similar reasoning as to why they have dress codes. They tend to assume that by enforcing a strict dress code, they ensure modest and appropriate attire, promote a sense of professionalism, and thus maintain a strong reputation. However, for all their theoretical positives, dress codes can also send a bad message to students and families.
One of the simplest, largest ways we express ourselves as people is through our clothing; thus, by creating a dress code, students often have trouble expressing themselves. In the name of uniformity, individuality and creativity are at risk of being pushed aside. This suppression of individuality can make students feel disconnected from the community. Mrs. Matzkin, the Dean of Student life and Wellness, stated, “if the school prioritizes individuality and freedom of expression, then they shouldn’t have uniforms.” She highlighted the importance of fostering an environment where students are comfortable to express themselves and their identities. Mr. Howes, Dean of Community Life, expanded on this point, stating, “Students feeling like things are being imposed upon them without having a voice is often a common issue.” This lack of freedom can make students feel isolated, which emphasizes the need for schools to rethink how strict dress codes and uniforms affect students' well-being and ability to express themselves.
Christopher Howes, the Dean of Student Life, has just arrived on The Island this year. He has worked at several other schools, and remarked how “every school dress code is an issue.” When asked about some of his doubts regarding dress codes generally, Mr. Howes discussed how they can inhibit proper teacher-student relationships, as well as student-student relationships. Strained student-teacher relationships can arise, leading to decreased trust and communication in the classroom. Additionally, if there are specific standards of dress, students may judge one another when they fail to meet the proper standard.
The limitations that dress regulations create often do not align with their intended purpose. Therefore, many dress codes should be reassessed in order to make sure they exemplify the standards each individual school wants to represent.
